Restaurants in California are preparing to reopen their doors to customers after the state allowed counties to loosen restrictions during the coronavirus pandemic. California Governor Gavin Newsom announced Tuesday that restaurants can reopen to serve food - customers and malls can do business as long as they comply with state-imposed restrictions and guidelines.

Newsom said all bars in the district will have to shut down and many state beaches and parking lots will remain closed for the weekend. Newport Beach, which has one of the highest rates of coronavirus in California, will close all beaches on Friday and Saturday, while Seal Beach and Huntington Beach will remain closed only on Saturday. All restaurants in 19 counties, including Los Angeles County, must stop operating indoor dining beginning Friday, a measure aimed at slowing the aggressive resurgence of COVID in those 19 states.

In Northern California, where the number of hospital admissions is still rising, albeit more slowly, some beaches have reopened, though visitors are keeping their distance. Some jurisdictions have voluntarily slowed their reopening plans, including Santa Barbara County, San Bernardino County and San Diego County.

So far, only Butte and El Dorado counties have claimed to meet the criteria that would allow them to move to the second stage of reopening plans, but the affected counties are in Southern California, where hospital rates have risen in recent years, particularly in southern counties, including Imperial, San Bernardino, and Los Angeles, which now account for nearly half of all cases nationwide.
